Daniel Ricciardo threatens F1 rival 'pull a stunt like that again and we're done'

Daniel Ricciardo has jokingly warned Alex Albon ‘we’re done’ after the British-Thai driver made a social media post poking fun at his Formula One rival. Albon produced a stunning double overtake on Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon at the Canadian Grand Prix last Sunday.

The Williams star raced around the inside of Ricciardo before bursting through a small gap between both cars to pull away from Ocon. However, Ricciardo went on to have the last laugh as he finished eighth, scoring his first Grand Prix points of the 2024 season.

Albon failed to finish the Grand Prix. His race was ended shortly after his overtake following a clash with Carlos Sainz.

Ricciardo has jokingly warned that he and Albon ‘are done’ if the latter produces a similar ‘stunt’ again. Albon appeared to have taken one of Ricciardo’s hoodies and made an amusing instagram post.

The 28-year-old wrote: “Double overtake and a free hoodie? Cheers @danielricciardo (for both).”

Ricciardo joked back: “Anytime buddy. The clothing. The overtake, pull a stunt like that again and we’re done.”

A positive Canadian Grand Prix was a welcome respite for Ricciardo. The Australian driver, 34, has endured a tough season with RB and sits 14th in the overall leaderboard with just five points.

Red Bull technical advisor Helmut Marko brutally told Motorsport.com of Ricciardo’s form outside of Canada this season: “The rest is not impressive yet.”

It comes with the experienced driver embroiled in a row with 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve. The former Williams star said of Ricciardo before the Canadian Grand Prix: “Why is he still in F1? We’re hearing the same thing now for the last four or five years, we have to make the car better for him. Sorry, it’s been five years of that.”

Ricciardo was unimpressed by the comments and responded at a press conference by saying: “I heard he’s been talking s***. But he always does. I think he’s hit his head a few too many times. So I don’t know if he plays ice hockey or something.

“I won’t give him the time of day but all those people can suck it. I want to say more but we’ll leave him behind.”

Villeneuve has since doubled down on his criticism. He told CryptoSportsBetting: “Daniel Ricciardo is a hot potato.

“It’s always risky to criticise him because he’s extremely protected by his team and the media and by fans on social media. It’s a burnt subject, even if you say something constructive, you’ll get burnt one way or another and you’ll have a lot of people who get angry.”
