Cynthia Erivo will host the 2025 Tony Awards and might defy the odds by being a certified EGOT — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner — when she does so this spring.
The 38-year-old “Wicked” star will host the 78th Annual Tony Awards, which celebrate the 2024-25 Broadway season, from Radio City Music Hall on June 8. The ceremony will kickoff at 8 p.m. ET and will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a press release. “I am looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”
Erivo’s newest role will take up the mantle from Tony nominee Ariana DeBose. The Oscar-winning “West Side Story” actress has emceed the last three consecutive ceremonies.
Erivo is currently tapped for an Academy Award for her big screen portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the long-awaited blockbuster. If she wins the Best Actress honor next month, Erivo would also become one of the few performers to have earned an EGOT.
She was previously twice nominated for the 2019 Harriet Tubman biopic, “Harriet,” in which she played the titular abolitionist. Erivo was tapped for Best Actress and Best Original Song (“Stand Up”), the latter nomination shared with Joshuah Brian Campbell.
The first “Wicked” installment — the “Wizard of Oz” prequel adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name — details the rivalry and eventual close friendship of Elphaba and Galinda the Good Witch (played by fellow Oscar nominee Ariana Grande) while they’re studying at Shiz University.
The critical darling and box office sensation brought in nearly $728 million worldwide, including more than $472 million domestic.
