Rep. Elijah Cummings defended the four freshmen Democrats that President Trump has called on to “go back” to their original countries, saying their allegiance is to the Constitution and the American people.

Asked about the president’s Sunday tweet that he doesn’t believe the quartet of congresswomen “are capable of loving our Country,” Cummings (D-Md.) said, “I take issue with that.”

”These are folks and women who love their country and they work very hard,” Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told ABC’s “This Week.” “They want to move us toward that more perfect union that our Founding Fathers talked about.”

He said three of the women – Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib – are members of his panel and that he knows Rep. Ilhan Omar.

“When you disagree with the president suddenly you’re a bad person. Our allegiance is not to the president. Our allegiance is to the Constitution of the United States of America and the American people,” he said on ABC.

Three of the four are US-born and all are US citizens.

Omar was born in Somalia and came to the US with her parents when she was 12.

Trump has been singling out the four progressive politicians – known collectively as “the Squad” – since tweeting last Sunday that they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
