A Connecticut man accused in the grisly murder of his father was arraigned Monday and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Steven Uricchio, 31, was formally charged with the murder of his father, Marc Uricchio, in Ridgefield, the Stamford Advocate reported.
Police said Uricchio called the cops on himself early Saturday morning, according to News 12 Connecticut. He allegedly told a 911 dispatcher he hurt his father and then clarified, “I murdered him.”
“Uricchio then paused and stated, ‘really, really badly,’” according to a police report obtained by the outlet.
Officers arrived on the scene to find Marc Uricchio, 81, dead in an upstairs bedroom.
The elder Uricchio had been stabbed in the face, torso and groin, police said. Some of his internal organs were exposed, according to authorities. Investigators saw a trail of blood in the home and followed it to a filet knife.
Cops said they also found Steven Uricchio with blood on his hands inside the home, according to the Danbury News-Times.
Danbury State’s Attorney David Applegate requested a competency evaluation at Monday’s arraignment, citing “the admissions that were made coupled with a particularly gruesome crime scene,” News 12 reported.
Defense attorney William Dow agreed, telling the court “there is a significant mental health history here.”
Steven Uricchio was carried into the court by U.S. Marshals and slumped over a table for a long stretch during Monday’s arraignment, even though the judge repeatedly asked him to stand up.
Uricchio is due back in court on Sept. 4.
