Bethany (played by Lucy Fallon) has had a turbulent time on Coronation Street since she returned to the cobbles from Italy in 2015, becoming embroiled in a dark grooming plot as well as having several failed relationships.
After taking a liking to her mother Sarah Platt’s (Tina O’Brien) boyfriend Gary Windass (Mikey North), the teenager has been getting closer to fellow Bistro waiter Ryan (Ryan Prescott) however, a romance has not yet blossomed.
However, when a new family arrives on the ITV soap later this year, Bethany will form a friendship with the youngest son of the clan, James Bailey (Nathan Graham), unaware he is harbouring a secret which could jeopardise any chance of a romance.
Unaware her new crush is gay, it seems Bethany could be on track for yet another failed relationship, but could Ryan finally pluck up the courage to admit his true feelings for the youngster as she reels from her discovery?
Bethany will spark the friendship with James as he arrives as the first member of the Bailey family this summer, before the young footballer becomes embroiled in a sports homophobia storyline the ITV soap is set to explore.
Although James is content with his sexuality, he is hiding the fact he is gay from his family and fellow team members at Weatherfield county, fearing the reaction he would receive if he were to open up to them.
Speaking about the upcoming plot to press, including Express.co.uk, executive producer Iain MacLeod teased: “We wanted to look at a modern story of a young gay man. So, it won’t be your normal coming out story where we see James wrestling with his sexuality.”
With his friends and family in the dark, Bethany will be unaware of James’ sexuality, leading her to develop feelings for the young football star.
Teasing the plot between the two youngster, Iain confirmed Bethany will be the young female James will spark a friendship with.
“What we don’t want from James is that he leads anyone on particularly. So, it’s more James at every turn tries to do the right thing but sort of ends up accidentally leading somebody on a little bit.”
Speaking more about James’ character, Iain explained: “James is fundamentally a decent guy, in fact everybody in this family is. No one’s got a side or a nastiness.”
As Bethany deals with the fact another relationship if off the cards, will she be the one to help James open up to his family about his sexuality, or will she decide to cut ties with the young footballer?
With Ryan seeing how close Bethany is getting to James, unaware of the fact the footballer isn’t interested in his love interest, will he ask Bethany to be his girlfriend after months of flirting?
Confiding in Bethany about his secret, Bethany could be the Weatherfield resident who will help James find love when he does open up to his family if they remain friends, with Iain explaining the young footballer will get a love interest once his family has settled on the cobbles.
Elsewhere in Weatherfield, the drama concerning the Underworld factory roof collapse has led to major repercussions for many characters on the cobbles.
Not only has factory boss Carla Connor (Alison King) spiralled into a deep state of paranoia, leading to her to vanish from the street, builder Gary has found himself facing trouble from loan shark Rick Neelan (Greg Wood).
Struggling with his finances before the roof collapse, Gary turned to Rick to help him out but the loan shark is now calling for repayment, trapping the builder into doing his dirty work in trying to con more people.
However, while Gary defies Rick’s orders, Carla’s business partner Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) could be facing time behind bars after he admitted to police he had put his savings into the factory account to prevent ex-wife Elsa (Kelly Harrison) getting her hands on more money from the divorce.
What Nick failed to confess was his savings of £80,000 was grandmother Audrey Roberts’ (Sue Nicholls) money which he scammed from her.
As the factory owner spirals a new web of lies, will the police trip him up as the investigate Nick further, or will Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) expose the schemer?
Coronation Street continues Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
