Coronation Street bosses take drastic action to raise funds for cash-strapped soap

BOSSES of cash strapped Coronation Street have taken drastic action to rake in some money from the soap.

The ITV soap has been rocked by a cash crisis of late with many stars having been axed or have chosen to leave the programme.

And now bosses have taken action to raise funds for the cash-strapped soap.

Corrie bosses have applied to trademark the ‘Corrie’ brand with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office.

According to reports, the show wants to be able to flog items for fans to buy including the likes of toiletries, cosmetics, soaps and perfumes.

The soap could also sell essential oils, perfumes, make-up, hair lotions, shampoos and suntan lotions.

The Mirror reports that the application “also extends to homewares like kitchen utensils and bed linen”.

This means fans of the hit Manchester-based soap opera might soon be able to stock up on an array of ‘Corrie’ branded goodies.

The trademark for the name ‘Corrie’ was filed last month by ITV/

It will stay in place for 10 years once it has all gone through and been finalised.

Speaking to the aforementioned outlet, an intellectual property lawyer opened up about what this means for the soap.

They said that the trademark “enhances the TV company’s capacity to take action against unauthorised third parties that might use its name for commercial purposes”.

The expert went on to say that just by having these trademarks registered “can serve as a significant deterrent” to any third party contemplating the use of the name ‘Corrie’.

“Moreover, it enhances ITV’s prospects for commercialising the Corrie brand,” they added, noting how “they are likely to seek opportunities to license these trademarks to partners, generating revenue through royalties in the process”.

Other items that the soap are looking to trademark are “lunch boxes, beer glasses, water bottle and teapots.”

As well as “hats, ties, rain ponchos and bathrobes”.

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025

ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.

This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.

Luca Toolan – Mason Radcliffe

Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him.

Sue Devaney – Debbie Webster

In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she’s hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King – Yasmeen Metcalfe

The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

Fans of the long-running soap can already purchase items from the Coronation Street gift shop at the site of the tour.

According to the shop itself, the Corrie shop is “an absolute treasure trove”.

They state: “We’ve got tote bags, towels, and mugs with famous Corrie quotes plastered all over ’em!

“It’s like owning a little piece of the Street.”

And on the ITV shop, items such as a Coronation Street puzzle and ‘I heart Corrie’ mugs and t-shirts are currently available.

So it looks as though the shop will soon be getting a whole load of brand new stock once the trademark has gone through and been rubber stamped.
