Connecticut police ID baby found dead in bathtub over the weekend

A 7-month-old Connecticut baby found dead in a bathtub over the weekend was publicly identified Wednesday by police.

Cops confirmed Angel Rodriguez was the boy who died Sunday at a hospital in New Haven, the New Haven Register reported.

Rodriguez’s mother, Elizabeth Portocarrero, told the paper she was not at home when emergency responders arrived at the East Haven home Sunday night.

“I wasn’t there. I was working,” Portocarrero told the Register. “I’m the primary provider for the children. Dad doesn’t work, so he watches the kids.”

Portocarrero said she and Angel’s father had separated but were co-parenting their two children, according to the Register. Angel’s older brother, 3-year-old Alexander Rodriguez, was playing with him in the bathtub, Portocarrero said.

East Haven police previously said they did not believe there was foul play in the case but would continue investigating.

Cops were called to the home in East Haven around 9 p.m. Sunday, after medical teams had already responded to an alert about an unresponsive child, authorities said. Angel was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials previously said Angel spent the majority of his time at Portocarrero’s home in Ansonia, on the west side of New Haven.

Portocarrero told the New Haven Register she didn’t know exactly what happened that led to Angel’s death. The boy’s father has not spoken publicly.

“We are working hard to establish the facts, and will share additional information once we are in a position to do so,” East Haven police officer Joseph Murgo told the Register. “As you can imagine, this has been an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved.”
