Central Connecticut police are investigating a “possible explosive device” found and later detonated on a busy Meriden sidewalk Friday morning.
Authorities warned locals to stay clear of the area around Hanover Street and Randolph Avenue around 9:30 a.m.
“This is an ongoing investigation and the Connecticut Bomb Squad has been activated,” the Meriden Police Department posted on Facebook.
Locals at a nearby gas station told NBC Connecticut they heard two explosions Friday morning after detonation experts intentionally set off the device. A man sitting in a diner, who heard a loud bang, confessed to being a bit frightened about a possible bomb being left in the area.
“We’re hoping there are none others,” Police Capt. John Mennone told reporters. “As of right now, it’s the only one we know of.”
Authorities said at noon the coast was clear, but provided no details about the device. No injuries were reported.
Police are still searching for whoever left the device in the area.
