Colorado dog breeder found dead, up to 10 Doberman puppies missing

Authorities are searching for as many as 10 missing Doberman pinscher puppies after their Colorado-based breeder was found dead over the weekend.

Paul Peavey was initially reported missing on Aug. 21, days after he was last heard from on the night of Aug. 19, according to a statement from the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. On Saturday, a privately organized search party discovered his body, which is slated to undergo an autopsy on Wednesday.

“His death is considered a homicide; however, we do not believe the public is in imminent danger,” the sheriff’s office said in a post on X.

Peavey lived in a trailer and ran a business called Elite European Dobermans in Idaho Springs, a city some 35 miles west of Denver, police said. According to its website, the business “is committed to delivering up to 2 quality litters per year,” which are raised on 110 acres of land.

In wake of his death, police said nearly a dozen puppies were missing from Peavey’s property, but authorities have not yet said whether the dogs — typically worth several thousand dollars each — could be a motive for his death.

In a series of updates on social media, authorities have asked the public for help in locating the missing canines, noting that Peavey’s pups were microchipped. They said its possible the pets were sold on social media and requested that anyone “who purchased a Doberman puppy in the central Colorado area within the last week” to check for “a microchip and contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office.”

An investigation into the matter is ongoing. So far, no arrests have been announced and no other details have been provided.
