Victory would have given Providence a good chance of reaching this weekend’s March Madness draw.
But the college outfit struggled to fire and ended up suffering a 75-69 loss.
It saw them knocked out of the Big East Tournament in the process.
While they now lie miles off the pace in the Big Sky NCAA Division 1 league – leaving their March Madness hopes in tatters.
And speaking after the game, English blasted Providence’s performance in a press conference.
He said: “Disappointing effort, disappointing outcome. But we played true to the pitiful, embarrassing season we’ve had.
“That falls on me. The work to correct it begins, and we will.
“In winning basketball, there are certain things where you don’t deserve to play.
“Giving up offensive rebounds, consistently playing off one foot at the rim when you don’t have an angle to score.
“Not boxing out, not guarding the ball, allow shooters to shoot 3s – forget the rotation.
“You need to sit on the bench, identify the right people, players and cultivate that. Get our players up to that standard.
“We failed. We failed as a staff to get the level of shared purpose, to get the level of buy-in where you can go from film to practice to the court and do it.
“The work starts. Identifying the personnel, the student-athletes who have the right makeup and what it takes to win at a high level – this level.
“Cultivating that culture, that standard, every day. That’s how.”
