When it comes to cleaning it can most definitely feel like a chore having to do it day in and day out.
Especially when it comes to cleaning the kitchen and tidying up after cooking.
But did you know that cleaning your kitchen appliances is essential for maintaining a hygienic environment?
Not only will keeping on top of your cleaning routine will ensure the longevity of your kitchen equipment, in particular, refrigerators.
To help consumers avoid their appliances becoming unhygienic, experts at home appliance and electronics manufacturer, Hisense UK have shared the dangers of neglecting appliance hygiene.
It is strongly recommended that you deep clean your fridge every three to four months.
Remove all contents, wipe down shelves and drawers with a mixture of baking soda and water, and ensure the door seals are clean to maintain energy efficiency.
Neglecting to clean your fridge properly can lead to providing breeding grounds for bacteria like salmonella, listeria and E. Coli.
Be sure to thoroughly clean the drawers in the fridge, as they are often where most scraps of food are left.
While keeping your fridge clean is important, it’s equally crucial to know what foods don’t belong in there.
Here are several common foods that should never be refrigerated:
-
Tomatoes: Refrigeration can make tomatoes lose their flavour and become mealy, therefore it’s best to keep them at room temperature.
-
Potatoes: The cold temperature can convert the starch in potatoes to sugar, altering their flavour and texture. Store them in a cool, dark place instead.
-
Onions: Onions can become soft and mouldy in the fridge due to moisture, meaning they go off much quicker than if they are stored in a dry, well-ventilated place.
-
Bread: Refrigerating bread can make it dry out quickly, despite the common belief that it prolongs its shelf life. It is better to store it on the counter, in a sealed bag or bread bin.
-
Garlic: The cold temperature of the fridge can cause garlic to sprout a few weeks early, significantly shortening its shelf life. They are best stored at room temperature in a well-ventilated space.
Taking a few minutes each day to care for your appliances can save you significant time and money in the long run.
