We all know that lemons are the perfect natural ingredients for homemade cleaning solutions, especially if you’re trying to avoid harsh chemicals.
Some cleaning experts have tipped lemon oil specifically as the best ‘natural degreaser’ for cleaning your oven.
Doug Rogers, president of Mr Appliance, a Neighborly company, told NBC News that lemon oil is one of the best ways to get rid of tough grease stains.
Not only is it a great cleaning solution, but also used to freshen up the scent of appliances.
He said: “In addition to its scent benefits, lemon essential oil is a great degreaser and can be an excellent tool to remove stubborn grease stains naturally.”
Lemon oil is made by extracting the peel from fresh lemon and using a cold press to prick and rotate the peel.
The oil also contains a number of antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, according to the Organic Authority.
So, how does it work? You’ll need water, white vinegar and lemon essential oil.
Rogers explained: “Spray a mixture of one cup water, one cup vinegar and lemon essential oil onto your stovetop and simply wipe clean.
“For tougher stains, sprinkle baking soda first, then spray and wipe.
“You can use the same technique to clean your oven – which will help prevent kitchen fires – many of which are caused by grease.”
Lemon oil helps to remove grease because it contains citric acid, which cuts through grease and grime.
As citric acid is also antibacterial and antiseptic, this means lemon oil can kill bacteria, as well as remove mould and mildew, noted Blanc Living.
If you don’t want to make a spray solution, Purdy and Figg recommend applying the lemon oil on a cloth, or apply the lemon directly to the area you’re treating.
