MG Motor UK has announced that the new second-generation MG3 is the most-affordable hybrid car on the market.
First seen at the Geneva Motor Show, the entry-level MG3 Hybrid+ SE starts at £18,495, making it cheaper than some of the most popular petrol hatchbacks such as the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo.
David Allison, Head of Product and Planning for MG Motor UK, noted that the MG3’s low cost will not make it any less fun to drive.
He explained: “There is still a very strong demand for the affordable, practical and fun-to-drive supermini, and we believe the MG3 Hybrid+ will appeal to many customers.
“Like all MG models, it will challenge the established superminis with its competitive price, whilst also delivering outstanding value with no compromises when it comes to equipment. We’re confident that if you simply wish to drive this MG for something other than daily commuting, it will offer a fun and involving experience.”
Replacing the first-generation model, which first launched on the Chinese market in 2011, the MG3 Hybrid+ shares quite a few styling elements with other models in the company’s range.
Sharp pointed headlights, previously seen on the MG4 electric car, help to give the supermini a more aggressive appearance, whilst ridges on the bonnet and doors add some SUV-style muscle.
Inside, MG has replicated that big car-feel with a full-sized centre console splitting the driver and front passenger seats and a somewhat squared-off steering wheel.
Despite the entry-level SE trim level being about £3,000 cheaper than other hybrid superminis, such as the Renault Clio E-Tech, it still comes with features such as a 10.25-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring and sat-nav, a reversing camera and adaptive cruise control.
Motorists looking for extra luxury can also opt for the £20,495 MG3 Hybrid+ Trophy, which offers a 360 degree camera system, heated front seats, keyless entry and automatic windscreen wipers.
All MG3 models come with a selection of driver assistance systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and a seven-year or 80,000-mile warranty.
All MG3 Hybrid+ models will be powered with a setup comprising of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 134bhp electric motor, producing 192bhp overall.
Whilst not the most economical hybrid in the world, the MG3 is said to average 64.2mpg and can accelerate from 0-62mph in a brisk eight seconds.
Available to order now, the first deliveries of the new MG3 Hybrid+ are expected to take place later in 2024.
