Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for Chelsea after some brilliant play from N’Golo Kante.
The Frenchman marauded his way through midfield before passing to Christian Pulisic, who shifted the ball onto Giroud, who slotted home with ease.
But Sadio Mane equalised on right after half-time and neither side could grab the winner before extra-time.
Mane doubled his tally in the extra 30 minutes, however, before Jorginho put a penalty into the bottom corner after Tammy Abraham was fouled by Adrian. And the game went to penalties where

Great early save from Salah but did not seem his usual commanding self, with his distribution not always up to scratch.
Did his best to offer some width but was largely concerned by Mane, who he managed with some success.
His speed of thought and action was tested by Liverpool’s press and generally stood up to the challenge.
An important body in the way in crucial moments and did well to spot a lot of Liverpool’s danger early.
Struggled to keep tabs on Salah as most do. Seems to have the odd lapse of concentration in his make-up.
Played a pivotal role in getting Kante further forward and was a vital cog in the first half. Faded slightly though.
Chelsea’s best player – the debate will begin again over his best position but this is more what Sarri envisaged.
Still seemed very rusty after the summer and was guilty of conceding cheap possession at times when Chelsea neededit.
However much Chelsea fans want him to be, he is not Eden Hazard, but he gave a pretty good impression at times.
Always seems to rise to the occasion in Europe even
against Premier League opposition. Took his goal well.
Some great passes around the box had Liverpool in trouble early in the game but lost momentum rather.
Looked confident when he came on but missed in the shootout.
