Chef's 'mind-blowing' hack to make 'perfect' poached eggs without a saucepan


A gorgeously poached egg has a firm egg white that encapsulates a runny, golden yolk in the middle. Yet, achieving the perfect poached egg using a saucepan and boiling water can prove challenging.

A TikTok user, @danarebeccadesigns, has shared a simple method that has left viewers astounded. In the video, she demonstrates how her mum poaches an egg. Her mum revealed: “I recently learned how to poach an egg, and I thank whoever it was on TikTok.

“Break an egg into a small Pyrex bowl, add a little bit of water – just enough to cover the yolk – and put it in the microwave.”

Depending on the microwave, this method can take between 36 to 45 seconds. She then removed the dish from the microwave, exclaiming: “Out comes the perfect poached egg!”

Using a slotted spoon, she transferred the egg onto a plate, slicing it open to reveal a perfectly runny yolk.

Some users reported their eggs exploding in the microwave, but this can be prevented by adding a pinch of salt to the water or pricking the yolk with a toothpick.

Another tip was to cover the dish with clingfilm for easier clean-up. The majority of viewers, however, were enamoured with this method.

One contributor exclaimed: “Omg this is mind-blowing. I just tried it out and it worked. Thank you.” Another shared her success: “I tried this three weeks ago and the poached egg came out so much better than usual.”

Meanwhile, somebody else was thrilled: “It’s amazing. We cook them this way all the time since seeing it last week on a different TikTok.”

Other have since replicated the cooking hack on TikTok – and even a chef has endorsed poaching an egg in the microwave.

“Poach your egg in the microwave; that’s how I do it,” the chef confessed to her viewers. Donning her chef outfit, the chef advised: “Crack your little egg into a bowl or a little ramekin.

“You need something that is about at least twice as deep as the height of the egg… remember it’s the microwave, don’t use plastic.”

The chef continued: “We’re going to pour water over the egg; you want to submerge the egg by at least half an inch to an inch – otherwise you could risk an [explosion].

“Every microwave is different; on mine, 44 seconds on high… my old microwave was 36 seconds, you have to play around.”

People will need between 35 to 50 seconds to poach their egg, depending on their microwave – and it also depends on how you like your eggs.

“I like mine perfect, because I’m a chef and it has to be perfect, which means a firm white and runny yolk,” the chef emphasised.

Then she showed off her “perfect poached egg” that she took out from the microwave. “Just look at that,” she beamed. “Perfect!”
