Celtic on brink of Fraser Forster transfer with Southampton star set for medical today

The former England international has slipped beneath the radar after being frozen out of the Southampton first team set up.

Ralph Hassenhuttl has given the goalkeeper permission to return to Scotland, seeing that he is happy with Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy.

Neil Lennon has been forced into the transfer market after Scott Bain dislocated his thumb while in action and is going to need some time to recover.

Now the 31-year-old is set to provide healthy competition for Craig Gordon at Parkhead ahead of Bain’s return to the side.

He is set to have his medical today, according to The Sun.

Forster initially proved a real hit on the south coast before a number of contributing factors saw him lose his place in the starting eleven.

He will now return north of the border to Glasgow where he won three Scottish Premiership titles.

There’s hope that Celtic can help him get his career back on track and enjoying his football again.

Forster has won six caps for England and travelled to the 2014 World Cup as part of Roy Hodgson’s squad. He did not feature in Brazil.

Celtic boss Lennon has admitted that he does not know how much cash the club have at their disposal to spend on transfers.

“I can’t comment on that, I’m not aware of how much money there is but Peter does what’s best for the club and he always has done, maybe to the detriment of himself sometimes,” he said ahead of the Europa League qualifier with AIK.

“I know he puts the club first and the future of the club, at all times.”

The Northern Irishman was then asked whether he is being backed by the board despite the club’s disappointing exit from the Champions League against Cluj last week.

“Of course. We are working to bring in three or four players in before the window shuts,” he added.

“Again, we are over-analysing the recruitment side of things.

“Some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t worked and that happens in football.”
