Several people have been injured, including one seriously, amid reports a car collided with crowds at a cemetery in the Republic of Ireland.
A grandfather has been seriously hurt.
Gardai confirmed an incident happened at around 4pm on Sunday at St Patrick’s cemetery in Dundalk.
The Irish police force said a pedestrian had been seriously injured while other people sustained minor injuries in an incident at Dowdallshill.
Today the annual blessing of the graves ceremony was taking place.
The incident took place shortly before 4pm, not long after the service had started.
Footage posted online showed emergency services in attendance as a large crowd gathered in St Patrick’s cemetery, where broadcaster RTE said an annual blessing of the graves service had been taking place.
Simon Conroy was one member of the public who witnessed the incident.
He told The Irish Times a car drove into the cemetery, and then accelerated towards the main stage.
After colliding with a number of people, the car turned around and sped back out of the area, he said.
The man who was seriously injured is a grandfather, parish priest Fr Mark O’Hagan said.
Describing the incident as “terrifying”, he added: “I could hear this screaming and shouting. And there was a lot of people running and a lot of people screaming.”
The driver sped through the graveyard past the priest towards a car park before driving back towards him and mounting the kerb, Fr O’Hagan said.
He added: “I tried to wave at him to try and slow him down or stop him.
“He sped on straight through the people again. It was terrifying.” A man in his late 20s – believed to be the driver of the car – has been arrested, Gardai said.
A police spokesman said: “It is understood from initial investigations that a dark coloured car drove at a number of persons in the cemetery who were attending the annual blessing of the graves event.
“One man (age unknown) was seriously injured and take to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, a small number of people received superficial injuries.
“The offending car then drove out of the cemetery onto the public road and collided with a number of parked cars before coming to a stop.
“A man in his late 20s, believed to the driver, was arrested at the scene.”
