Canary Islands issued 'severe' weather warnings for high winds and rough seas

Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, has issued yellow weather warnings for the Canary Islands amid Storm Ivo, which has brought strong winds and rough seas to the archipelago.

High winds of up to 43mph are expected across the archipelago, and rough seas are also affecting the coastlines.

A high-level orange warning for rough seas was implemented on the top tourist island of Lanzarote. It remained in place until 11:59 pm on Thursday (January 30), when it reverted to a yellow warning.

The severe weather conditions have highlighted the need for caution, particularly for outdoor activities or travelling near the coast.

The authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay informed about official weather warnings and follow safety recommendations.

Tenerife

Tenerife – the largest and most popular island in the archipelago – has two active yellow weather warnings.

Maximum gusts up to 43mph from the northeast are expected, particularly affecting the island’s summits and the slopes of the southeast and northern slopes. This warning remains in place until 11:59 pm on Friday.

A rough sea warning is also active until 11:59 pm on Friday, affecting the eastern, southern, and western coasts. Northeast “Force 7” winds of up to 38mph are expected in the southeast.

Gran Canaria

Maximum wind gusts of 43mph affect the eastern, southern and western slopes and Gran Canaria’s highlands. This warning remains active until 9 am on Saturday (February 1).

A rough sea warning is also active until 11:59 p.m. on Friday night, affecting the eastern, southern, and western coasts. Force 7 northeast winds of up to 38mph are blowing in the southeast and west.

Lanzarote

After the orange warning for rough seas on Thursday was lowered, Lanzarote is now under a yellow warning until 11:59 p.m. on Friday night.

Winds from the northeast are also expected to reach up to 38mph in the southeast.

La Palma

Two yellow warnings are also in place on the archipelago’s most northwesterly island, La Palma.

Maximum gusts of 43mph are expected, primarily impacting the island’s summits and its southeastern and northwestern slopes. This remains active until 11:59 pm on Friday night.

A rough sea warning is also active until 11:59 p.m. on Friday night, affecting the eastern, southern, and western coasts. The same Force 7 northeast winds are in the southeast of the island.

El Hierro

The farthest southern and western island, El Hierro, also has two weather warnings in place.

High winds of 43mph are affecting the entire island, especially the summits and the southeastern and northwestern slopes. This will also remain active until 11:59 pm on Friday

A yellow weather warning for rough seas affecting the western coast, with northeast winds of between 31 and 38mph, is also active until this time.

La Gomera

Two yellow weather warnings are active for La Gomera, the second-smallest of the main islands in the Canary Islands chain.

Maximum gusts of 43mph, will affect the entire island, particularly its summits and southeastern and northwestern slopes. This warning remains in place until 11:59 pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, a rough sea warning will be active until 9am on Saturday, affecting the western coast, with northeast winds of 31 to 38mph (Force 7) in the southeast.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura, the second largest island, will come off the best of the archipelago, with only one weather warning in place for rough seas.
