Brits take their tea seriously – and one Canadian found out the hard way.
Canadian Matt Giffenn has been documenting his time in the UK, and recently visited a tea house in the history-filled city of Bath.
Posting on TikTok, the videographer described the tourist-attraction as ‘very European’ and ‘Harry Potter’ like. He ordered a Bath Bun with clotted cream and jam, along with a pot of tea.
“I’m currently in Bath, England, and I feel like this is the perfect place in all of the UK to try my first-ever English glass of tea,” he said in a video which now garnered a whopping 748,000 views and thousands of likes.
“The only thing is I don’t know how to make a tea. I’m going to get absolutely flame for this,” he added – pouring some tea into his cup and adding a ‘dash’ of milk, hot water and sugar. “Now I know why you guys drink seven of these a day.”
However, hundreds of baffled Brits quickly took to the comments section to criticise Matt for misusing the water meant for topping up the tea pot.
“The way you made that tea is criminal,” one user wrote. Another agreed, commenting: “That owner was being super nice because I was screaming at you making that cup of tea.”
A third added: “Everyone screaming nooooooo when he put the hot water in.” Matt was also berated for his peculiar pronunication of ‘Bath’.
“The way you said BAUFFF,’ one user joked. While another quipped: “I’m currently in BOFF, England.”
Others roasted the Canadian for reffering to a cuppa as a ‘glass’ of tea, despite being served in a porcelain cup. “Glass of tea???? It’s a cup of tea,” one person fumed. Another scathed: “It’s CUP of tea, not glass.”
Matt took the roasting like a champ, replying to trolls with a slew of laughing emojis and defending his diluted tea by adding: “I lowkey prefer [it like] that.”
