Jeremy Hunt is under intense pressure to go further with tax cuts as he is set to unveil his pre-election Budget today.
The Chancellor is expected to slash national insurance by two percentage points in a move that could save the average worker £450 a year.
But Conservative MPs including former home secretaries Dame Priti Patel and Suella Braverman are urging him to knock 2p off income tax, which would also benefit other groups such as pensioners.
Dennis Reed, director of the Silver Voices campaign group, is also pushing for the move as he warned older people will be “bitterly disappointed” if they miss out.
