Bronx hospital walk-in stab victim was dad-to-be slain sticking up for friend: girlfriend

A Bronx man who died after showing up at a hospital with a stab wound had been knifed jumping in to protect a friend in a fight, according to the victim’s girlfriend — who is due to deliver their second child in just two weeks.

Keven Ramirez, 27, will never get to see the new baby, all because he interceded in a fight that wasn’t even his, his devastated girlfriend says.

His nine-months pregnant girlfriend Yomaira Gomez had a bad feeling and wasn’t comfortable with Ramirez going out Saturday night but he didn’t listen. Hours later, a buddy brought Ramirez, who had been stabbed in the chest, to BronxCare Health System, where he died.

“When they killed him, it wasn’t for him,” Ramirez said. “It was for his friend, the one that brought him to the hospital. So (Ramirez) was getting in the middle … He was always like that but I tell him, ‘That’s not good.’”

Hospital staff called police after Ramirez arrived mortally wounded just before 1 a.m. on Sunday. Cops retraced his steps and eventually determined he was stabbed in an apartment on Wythe Place in Mount Eden not far from where he lived.

There have been no arrests.

Gomez said she didn’t even find out about the stabbing until 9 a.m. that day, long after her boyfriend had died the hospital.

“When we get there they told me he died,” she said of her frantic trip to the hospital. “They told me when I got there. So I didn’t get time to say bye, you know? Maybe if you called me at the time it happened, maybe I would have time to see my baby daddy and he would talk to me. Something. But he already passed.”

Gomez and Ramirez already have a 2-year-old boy together. Ramirez was the father of a 6-year-old boy with a different woman. Gomez said none of the kids know about his death yet.

“That’s difficult.” she said. “The little one, he don’t sleep, nothing. He loves me but he was crazy for his father … I can’t tell them yet.”

Relatives launched a GoFundMe to help pay for the funeral and support Ramirez’ children.

“I’m nine months,” Gomez said.  “Like two weeks more and I’m done … I cannot say anything bad about my baby daddy. He was a good father.”

“But I always tell him, ‘Leave the streets. It’s a lot of problems,’” she added. “He would tell me, ‘Don’t worry, because you know how they are.’ “Because I was pregnant, he didn’t want to get me worried about him.”

Saturday night she was worried more than usual and upset with him for leaving her alone. But her anger turned to angst and she started calling to check on him — but he didn’t answer,

“We had a good relationship. He’s a nice person with me but I was mad,” Gomez said. “I was calling him a lot of times. He didn’t text  me back. He always texts me back.”

Gomez said Ramirez had been in the Bronx for about five years after coming to the city from the Dominican Republic. Ramirez’s mother died of COVID in 2020, about three months before Ramirez and Gomez started dating. She said Ramirez did not  know his father.

“When I met him he was in depression for his mom,” Gomez said. “He was the only son for his mom. He told me, ‘I love you a lot, because you remind me of my mom.’”
