A 16-year-old Bronx boy has died weeks after he was shot in the neck while riding his moped, cops said Thursday.
Kemari Sanders, 16, succumbed to his wounds on Oct. 4 — six weeks after a gunman opened fire outside a closed daycare on Bryant Ave. near Jennings St. in Crotona Park East just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 23, cops said.
“I was just upstairs on the phone with my boyfriend and I just heard a pop so I just thought it was a firework,” nearby resident Jelisa Munda, 17, told the Daily News in August.
Cops found the teen lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his neck. A sweatshirt, a few red Solo cups, a lighter and a moped were found nearby, cops were told.
Medics rushed Kemari to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition. He was less than a mile from home when he was shot, according to cops.
The shooter is still on the loose.
Sanders told his mother, Selena Cox, that he was going to a friend’s house prior to the shooting, Cox told News 12 in August.
The teen was uncooperative when questioned by detectives when he was conscious and still alive, a police source said.
Investigators suspect the shooting was linked to gang activity in the area, although it wasn’t clear if the victim was involved with a gang.
