Brits say mums deserve an £83,500 pay packet – but don’t get enough credit

BRITS reckon the job role of ‘mum’ should command an annual salary of more than £83,500.

A poll of 2,000 adults found seven in 10 couldn’t identify the role of ‘mum’ if it were described like a job – including working antisocial hours and the ability to keep the peace.

Other experiences included the ability to delegate and think creatively, with only 30% thinking such descriptions aligned.

Suggested key skills to be added to a mum’s CV would include being proficient in multitasking under pressure, skilled in providing emotional support and comfort, and adept at managing household schedules and calendars.

A spokesperson for Funky Pigeon which conducted the research ahead of Mother’s Day, said: “What is clear is that respondents certainly do value mums and everything they do.

“Looking at what experience they’d add to the CV of a mum, it’s so wide and varied it really showcases everything they do for us.

“However, the research has also shown that it can be easy at times to forget how much they do and show our appreciation.”

Other key skills of mums, according to those polled, included experience in crisis management, being a pro at finding lost items, and being a specialist in stain removal.

Meanwhile, 46% said they’re knowledgeable in first aid and ‘boo-boo healing’.

And 85% see the role of a mum as being a ‘real-life superhero’, with 68% believing they’re not given enough credit.

Of those in contact with their mum, 57% to them weekly or more, according to the OnePoll.com data.

When asked what is deemed enough effort, 69% said buying a present, while 55% thought sending a heartfelt card would do the trick.

Yet, 16 per cent thought chocs and a card from a petrol station were enough – with 19 per cent admitting they have forgotten to make an effort in the past.

However, 81 per cent usually do buy a card, with 34% choosing to personalise it, believing they’re more meaningful.

And 75% believe Mother’s Day is the perfect time to show your mum how much you care.

The spokesperson from Funky Pigeon added: “Thankfully, most people lucky enough to have a relationship with their mum make it known how much they care.

“A card is often seen as the bare minimum on their special day – and it feels a special, personalised and heartfelt card can go a long way to making them feel loved.”
