Deontay Wilder teases Anthony Joshua face-off
WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has hinted he could be ringside for Anthony Joshua’s June 1 showdown with Andy Ruiz.
“I’ve got a lot of obligations to fulfill,” Wilder said after his KO victory over Dominic Breazeale early on Sunday morning.
“But if that date is open for me you may see Deontay Wilder there.
“When it’s a good scrap, a good fight that people want to see, you might find me there.
“I can’t say right now, I can’t’ promise you that but when that time comes we’ll see what happens.”
Tyson Fury’s coach rules out Dillian Whyte fight
Tyson Fury’s trainer Ben Davison has insisted ‘The Gypsy King’ shouldn’t be forced to fight Dillian Whyte in a WBC heavyweight title eliminator bout.
“Dillian Whyte stylistically is not the toughest fight for Tyson, but with that being said, Tyson’s not going to fight a final eliminator – that’s ridiculous,” he told the Metro.
“He’s the lineal heavyweight champion of the world and everyone knows he beat Deontay Wilder, the WBC champion of the world.
“Why would he have to fight a final eliminator? That’s the bad bit of it.
“But, Tyson is chasing fights with Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua and if those fights can’t be made, don’t get it twisted, we’d gladly make that match-up with Dillian Whyte.”
Billy Joe Saunders eyes Canelo and Callum Smith fights
New WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders has set his sights on super-fights with Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith following his championship-clinching victory over Shefat Isufi last Saturday.
“Listen, my first 12-rounder at super middle. I said when I come back I don’t want to fluff around,” Saunders told BT Sport.
“He caught me in the sixth. It didn’t have me where my legs were gone. I haven’t been in a meaningful fight for 14 months. He’s number one with the WBO for a reason so he’s obviously good.
“My boxing ability will always get me further in the sport I believe. Thanks to my trainer Ben Davison for putting the weeks into me in camp. I want the big fights, the big names. The big domestic fights, unification fights. I moved up from middleweight as none of them would fight me.
“I could be out again in eight or nine weeks on the O2 Arena card on 13 July as I wasn’t really pushed too hard there.
“Every time I put a name out of who I want, it never happens. I’d like to make the Smith fight as it would be brilliant for the fans. I know he may have other plans next so it may not stack up next.
“Golovkin and Canelo do not want that style I have.”
