Birmingham City are hoping for a miraculous return from Gary Rowett to help them avoid relegation. The club is in talks with their former manager to take over as interim boss until the season’s end, reports the Mirror.
The St Andrew’s club is trying to stop a slide towards League One. Their permanent chief, Tony Mowbray, is ill and the decision-makers have decided to act now.
Birmingham City is just outside the relegation zone due to goal difference after gaining only one point from six matches under assistant Mark Venus.
But they’re calling on Rowett, who has lots of experience managing in the Championship, most recently at Millwall, to bring some stability and guide the club to safety.
Rowett, 50, spent two years at St Andrew’s, taking over after an 8-0 home defeat to Bournemouth and steering the club away from danger.
Now, Birmingham’s new owners, Knighthead, who have had a very chaotic first campaign, are hoping for a similar result.
The American owners have invested heavily in infrastructure projects but their efforts to improve have been undermined by the decision to replace John Eustace with Wayne Rooney.
This strange move disrupted the momentum of the campaign and after only two victories from 15 matches, the former England star was replaced with Mowbray taking charge.
However, after a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, the 60 year old stepped back from his main management role due to health issues. It now seems that Rowett may step in to fill this gap for the rest of the season.
