Bicyclist struck by wrong-way driver fleeing police in Greenwich Village

A wrong-way driver fleeing from cops Wednesday struck a bicyclist in Greenwich Village during a frantic chase, police said.

Police officers were running after a suspect on foot when he suddenly jumped into a black sedan and took off around 3:05 p.m. at the intersection of Mercer and W. Third Sts., cops said. It was not immediately clear what prompted the chase.

The fleeing suspect then hit a 44-year-old cyclist on W. Third St. and kept going, cops said. EMS took the cyclist to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in stable condition, police said.

The fleeing suspect remains on the loose, cops said.

In the first 11 months of 2024, there were 398 vehicle crashes preceded by police pursuits, with at least 315 people injured — up 47% from the 215 people injured in police pursuit crashes over the same period last year.

The NYPD is working on a new pursuit policy following 10 prior deaths in pursuits where no drugs or guns were found, sources told the Daily News.

Anyone with information on Wednesday’s chase is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 577-TIPS.
