BARGAIN hunters who are sticklers for food quality are thrilled that Whole Foods’ affordable competitor is coming to Louisville.

The new store will take over the former Walmart in Blankenbaker Plaza.

This makes it the fourth opening of the grocery giant in the East End of the southern state.

One store on Old Henry Road has already opened, but two others are under construction on Flatrock Road in Eastwood, on Ballardsville and Brownsville Road have opened their doors.

With roughly 1400 locations, the southeastern grocery store is rapidly expanding.

Inflation has meant the cost of living has whacked household budgets, and shoppers say the supermarket is cheaper than Whole Foods but also sells bougie food.

In a Quora thread discussing which supermarket had a cheaper organic offering, the resounding consensus was Publix.

Amelia wrote: “Publix, definitely publix, Whole Foods is a rip off.”

Lee Middleton wrote: “My grocery spending used to be 80% Publix, 20% Costco/ others. But now? Post Pandemic, it’s all Publix.”

Jill Rafferty argued that whilst “Publix is hardly fancy, it’s well run, has great customer service, and carries quite a decent product selection at good prices, which is why it’s highly rated.

“I shop at Publix about twice a week. It’s my store of choice!”

Kerry Berger agreed: “I think Publix has an excellent selection of foods that are not as highly priced as Whole Foods.

Kevin Kopas added: “Nothing beats Publix, it has great quality foods, great service and pretty good prices.

“Obviously, if you compare Publix to something like Wal-Mart, you see a difference, but do I need to describe how bad Wal-Mart is?

“Whole Foods is close to the same higher-end level of groceries, but you pay for it.”

Some consumers did think that Whole Foods groceries were of better quality and more likely to be locally sourced, but this was often offset by the “exorbitant prices.”
