Bathroom expert’s ‘surprisingly’ effective way to remove toilet limescale for under 30p

An expert has shared that many people often overlook the importance of checking their toilets for limescale, which can lead to a build-up of mineral deposits and grime over time.

Brian Toward, CEO of bathroom retailer Wholesale Domestic, explained: “Dealing with limescale issues means it’s important to maintain the longevity and functioning of toilets.

“Limescale forms as a result of your home being located in a hard water area, which can leave stains and deposits in the toilet bowl and lead to damage to the porcelain over time.

“The best way to prevent and remove limescale is through regular cleaning, and there are many methods you can use.”

While many people use bleach to clean the toilet, Brian has shared how people can remove limescale with common household items.

This includes white vinegar and baking soda or even the use of a lemon to tackle stubborn marks in the bowl.

The expert said: “For a tough limescale issue, the first method is a powerful combination of white vinegar and baking soda.

“Pour about two cups of white vinegar into the toilet bowl, making sure it covers the limescale.

“Let it sit for an hour, then add a cup of baking soda and another one to two cups of vinegar. This will cause a fizzy reaction that helps break down the limescale.”

After 10 minutes, simply scrub with a toilet brush and flush to unveil a sparkling toilet.

For a more natural approach, the expert recommended lemon juice which can dissolve limescale thanks to its acidity.

Brian continued: “Pour the juice of three to four lemons into the bowl and let it sit for a few hours or overnight, scrubbing thoroughly before flushing.

“It may sound unconventional, but cola’s acidity can also help to remove limescale. Pour a can of the pop into the bowl and let it sit for several hours.”

Britons are advised to scrub and flush for a “surprisingly” effective clean, costing under 30p.

If you prefer a physical method, a pumice stone can be gently used to scrub away any marks, just be sure to wet the stone and bowl first to prevent scratching.
