The Kremlin has ended hours of speculation over whether Bashar al-Assad, the deposed Syrian leader, had fled to Russia.
The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Moscow had “nothing to say about Assad’s whereabouts”.
However, he confirmed Assad had been given asylum and that he had fled from Moscow following the lightning fall of his regime.
Asked whether Russia was surprised by the events unfolding in Syria, Peskov said: “What happened in general surprised the whole world. In this case, we are no exception.”
