If you have an iPhone in your pocket then it’s worth heading to the Settings menu and downloading the very latest software update as soon as you can. Apple has just released an ‘important’ iOS patch that it says fixes a number of bugs affecting its devices. A total of 35 security issues have been mended in the release including one that could allow hackers to cause unexpected system shutdowns on a device.
Explaining more, Apple said: “iOS 17.6. This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.”
To check your iPhone simply head to the Settings menu then tap General > Software Update. Here you should see iOS 17.6 and the option to Update Now or Update Tonight.
It’s a big 1GB file so make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi before performing the install otherwise it could impact the amount of mobile data you have left at the end of the month.
Your iPhone will also need to restart to complete the update so don’t hit the install button if you are waiting for an important phone call or text.
iOS 17.6 will be one of the last updates to be released before iOS 18 arrives in the autumn. This all-new operating system is now available in a beta test version and should get an official launch date in September.
Announced back in June, iOS 18 includes new ways to customise your Home Screen, a completely refreshed Photos apps and a new way to store passwords.
Messages, Mail and Maps also get new features plus there’s a redesigned Control Centre that features new groups of controls, which you can access more fluidly with a single, continuous swipe down on the Home Screen.
“We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customisation and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
“This release also marks the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core. We can’t wait for users to experience it.”
