The hotly anticipated “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” debuted Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, as star Anya Taylor-Joy celebrated her moment in the spotlight.
“Furiosa” was the 28-year-old’s first film at Cannes. She wore a champagne-colored custom Dior ballgown for the occasion, finished with Tiffany platinum-and-diamond jewels.
The classic look was a significant departure from Taylor-Joy’s eye-popping vintage Paco Rabanne ensemble from the film’s Australian premiere on May 2. That dangerously dramatic getup featured a see-through, gold-and-silver minidress covered in massive spikes, and a matching headpiece.
Though “Furiosa” was her first film at Cannes, Taylor-Joy had been to the festival before. In 2017, she received a Chopard trophy as an emerging actor. Charlize Theron, the first actress to play Furiosa in “Mad Max,” was the one who handed her the trophy.
Taylor-Joy was tapped to take over the role for the prequel film in 2020. Director George Miller said he initially considered using de-aging technology on Theron before deciding to cast Taylor-Joy instead.
Miller was also present at Wednesday’s premiere, likely the most anticipated event of the two-week festival, which ends May 25. Greta Gerwig, Eva Green, Naomi Campbell and Baz Luhrmann were among the stars in the audience.
“To show it in that cinema with about 2,000 people with impeccable sound and screening is a big thing. It’s kind of optimal cinema, really,” Miller said before the premiere.
“Furiosa” opens in North America on May 24.
