Americans to get up to $10k from $7.5 million data breach settlement – a check is not the only reward

ELIGIBLE Americans can claim a cash reward of up to $10,000 – as well as an additional free benefit.

The whopping $7.5million settlement comes after claims that health firm Enzo Biochem did not properly prevent a data breach.

The 2023 breach compromised sensitive patient information, according to the claims made in the lawsuit.

The multimillion-dollar settlement will now benefit individuals whose personal details were potentially leaked in the breach which took place on April 6 2023.

Those who received a mailed notice from the firm informing them of the data leak may have been affected.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claimed that Enzo Biochem specifically failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures which could have prevented the breach.

They say that due to the poor prevention measures and resulting breach – the plaintiffs suffered damages including risk of fraud and identity theft.

Health company Enzo Biochem did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to a $7.5million settlement to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the Enzo Biochem settlement, class members can receive up to $10,000 for documented losses related to the data leak.

These losses could include unreimbursed fraudulent charges, identity theft expenses, credit monitoring costs, computer software expenses and other related damages or costs.

Class members who did not experience documented damages can instead apply to receive a cash fund payment – which will be a pro rata share of the net settlement fund after documented loss claims and credit monitoring payments are paid.

Plaintiffs do not need to provide documentation for these payments.

All class members are eligible for two years of free credit monitoring and insurance services through Medical Shield Premium, regardless of which payment they claim.

The added reward on top of the given cash will come in the form of improvements to Enzo Biochem’s data security.

These promises include making additional improvements to their security measures in order to better protect consumer information.

Improvement measures include multi-factor authentication, encryption of consumer data, improved intrusion-detection and other policy improvements.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 23, 2025.

But in order to receive settlement benefits, all class members must submit a valid claim form by June 23, 2025.

It comes after Americans could claim a payment of up to $995 from a massive pot worth $1billion.

The cash payment came as the IRS said over 1.1 million people across the US had unclaimed refunds for the 2021 tax year.
