The US passport is the eighth strongest in the world in terms of mobility, allowing Americans to have easier access to more countries than holders of other passports.
To access some countries, such as the UK, Australia, or New Zealand, Americans need to apply for an ETA, which can range from $16-20.
In New Zealand, travelers are also charged a $100 tourist levy on arrival.
However, there are plenty of places where US passport holders don’t need to pay additional fees to visit.
Americans can travel to 120 destinations using just their passport – no other documentation is required.
Japan and Thailand are two countries that US travelers can explore visa-free, and they were also named two of the best 25 places to visit in the world by National Geographic.
In Japan, the educational magazine recommends visiting Kanazawa for a more traditional experience.
The castle city is only two hours away from Kyoto, and is packed with teahouses and gardens.
Visitors can even go back in time as they explore the samurai district.
In Thailand, the magazine recommends visiting Bangkok to experience an “intoxicating blend of old and new.”
Bangkok is home to dazzling skyscrapers, upscale restaurants, and a rich arts scene.
Those who travel a little outside of the city can walk around the magnificent Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a 17th-century Buddhist temple.
More adventurous American travelers can choose to fly to Senegal in Africa without a visa or ETA.
In Senegal, tourists can embark on a culinary adventure as they taste the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage dish, ceebu jën.
While most US passport holders need visas to visit any Middle East country, the United Arabe Emirates is one of the places they don’t need anything other than a passport to enter.
In the UAE, tourists shouldn’t miss the shopping megacenters in Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital.
Internationa travel requirements
Other than a visa, possible requirements for entry to other countries include:
- A passport that’s valid three to six months after entry
- Proof of an outbound or return flight
- Proof of residence, such as a hotel or relative’s address
- As many as four blank passport pages (if your passport does not have enough pages, you cannot add more; you’ll have to renew it)
- Vaccination records, particularly yellow fever (consult the Center for Disease Control’s destination list for all recommended and required vaccines)
- Proof of funds (bank statement) or a certain amount of money on hand
Although those countries don’t necessarily require a visa or ETA to visit, there may be other passport-specific requirements.
When traveling internationally, most places require that a visitor’s passport be valid for at least three to six months after you enter your destination.
Other countries may require that a visitor have a minimum of four blank passport pages and proof of an outbound or return flight.
Americans should check the Department of Homeland Security website before traveling to ensure all requirements are met.
