American in UK left stunned by Tom Kerridge's £37 Harrods fish and chips

Kerridge’s Fish and Chips, the brainchild of famed 51-year-old TV chef Tom Kerridge, has been delighting visitors since its grand opening in Harrods in June 2021.

Catapulting the traditional chippy into the lap of luxury, it resides within London’s renowned department store, tantalising taste buds with its high-end fish and chip interpretations.

Amongst its gastronomic innovations are starters like Citrus cured Chalk Stream Trout accompanied by fennel, and main courses such as delectable deep-fried Monkfish ‘scampi’ paired perfectly with Cornish new potatoes drenched in an aromatic herb butter.

The culinary journey at this esteemed establishment was recently documented on TikTok by Danielle (@dzaslavsky), a Miami native with a substantial following of 795,000. Eager to indulge in the quintessential British dish, she lavishly spent £37 and shared her culinary adventure online.

Her video featured her initial reactions as she savoured an inviting piece of fish and enthusiastically engaged with the tartar sauce. “It tastes like there’s no batter on here – the fish is so flaky, its delicious,” Danielle enthused.

With an affectionate blow to the camera, she then tasted a chip – or “fry”, naturally opting for ketchup and curry sauce dips. In the background, her companion voiced their approval, while Danielle endorsed the experience with the declaration, “The bomb,” accompanying a caption that read: “Kerridge’s Fish & Chips 10/10 – this was downstairs at the Harrods Food Hall.”

A Brit retorted, “This is designer fish and chips,” urging others to seek out more authentic experiences. “Get yourselves down a proper chippy. Also head over to Brick Lane. The Biegel shop is the best!”

Another TikTok user echoed the sentiment, advising: “Please go to Beigel Bake in Brick Lane. Ask for a salmon and cream cheese one or the ultimate salt beef and gerkins with mustard. You won’t regret it!”

Meanwhile, a third person lauded the upmarket choice, exclaiming: “Those fish and chips look excellent,” while a fourth commented: “Get what ya pay for, not being forced to go… London Harrods £37 ain’t the worst.”

Harrods’ web site boasts about its offering: “British meals don’t get more classic than fish and chips. For young and old alike, the crunch of batter encasing tender fish together with a chunky chip dipped in ketchup is the ultimate heart-warming nod to comfort and nostalgia. Trust in Tom Kerridge to take the UK’s favourite dish to new heights at his eponymous restaurant.”

It adds: “On the menu created by one of the UK’s best-loved chefs, you’ll find Britain’s finest, freshest seafood, all ethically caught and hand-selected by local fishmongers. From the daily catch to hand-dived scallops and native lobster, there’s a variety of grilled and deep-fried options – with the chef’s signature crisp and gluten-free batter – that will have you salivating.”
