Alpine appeared to aim a cheeky dig at Oscar Piastri before announcing that Jack Doohan will be driving for them in 2025. Doohan has been promoted from his reserve driver role to replace Esteban Ocon as Pierre Gasly’s team-mate next season.
Before confirming that Doohan would be racing for them in 2025, Alpine teased the announcement with a series of cryptic posts on X, formerly Twitter. They appeared to poke fun at Piastri with a thinly-veiled dig at the McLaren driver, writing: “We understand that…”
The message appeared to be a reference to the statement Piastri released when Alpine incorrectly announced that he would be driving for them in 2023. The Aussie, who was in Alpine’s junior ranks at the time, ended up signing a contract with McLaren.
In response to Alpine jumping the gun, Piastri famously said: “I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.”
After their cheeky dig at Piastri, Alpine confirmed that Doohan had signed a contract to race alongside Gasly from 2025. The 21-year-old has been serving as their reserve driver this season after finishing third in Formula Two in 2023.
