Alejandro Garnacho’s telling nine-word verdict after Joshua Zirkzee blunder costs Man Utd

Alejandro Garnacho remains in high spirits despite squandering an open goal in the second successive match during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion. United suffered their first loss of the season at the Amex Stadium on Saturday after Garnacho thought he had completed a second-half comeback.

Danny Welbeck scored his 100th club career goal – and his fifth against his former club – to fire the hosts into the lead against the run of play in the first half.

Amad – making his fifth consecutive Premier League start a day after announcing the death of his stepmum – equalised on the hour mark.

Garnacho then thought he had put United ahead in the latter stages after finishing a scintillating move involving Amad and Bruno Fernandes.

However, Joshua Zirkzee, in a central position, slid as he attempted to connect with Fernandes’ square ball in front of Garnacho, who was stationed at the back post.

Zirkzee’s momentum on a rain-soaked pitch saw him stop on the goalline, and the 20-year-old winger couldn’t direct his slotted finish away from him.

His effort rebounded off the Dutchman’s knee before it crossed the line, and VAR adjudged him to have been in an offside position, denying United in freak circumstances.

Joao Pedro – unmarked from an inswinging cross to the back post – worsened the sting by condemning Erik ten Hag to his fourth defeat in five games against Brighton.
