Supermarkets are notorious for their ever-changing shelves, often to the dismay of shoppers who find their newfound favourites suddenly missing. But an Aldi employee has let slip a secret code that could save your shopping heartbreak.
A savvy Reddit user highlighted a cryptic handwritten ‘D’ on a product’s price tag. While bargain hunters were chuckling over a comical note beside Langham’s Doggy Ice Cream’s price tag, which stated “For Dogs Only! !” and was priced at £2.99, another eagle-eyed shopper noticed something else a bold letter ‘D’ scribbled in black.
The comment thread quickly unravelled the mystery, with one person explaining: “The D in the circle means it’s been deleted from the system and will be discontinued after this stock sells out.”
Another confirmed, saying: “I came to the comments to say this. New in, and then immediately delisted. Aldi are like – nope! Not doing this. Not today satan.”
An Aldi staff member chimed in, sharing their experience: “It’s funny because we have the Jude’s ice cream for dogs at our shop, and it’s actually a pretty good seller! Especially as we have the individuals at the front of the shop, when it’s hot!”.
Not only supermarkets utilise codes to communicate with staff about products. A former Primark employee has spilled the beans on what she learned behind the scenes during her stint at the massively popular fashion retailer – and it’s quite revealing.
The ex-sales assistant revealed that if you hear ‘Mr Brown’ being called to the till, someone is in hot water. The Primark staffer alleged that the security guards stationed at the door in 2020, when she shared her videos to prevent theft, were from Brown’s Security Company, and they were the intended recipients of the message – staff simply didn’t want to alarm customers that security was en route.
Least glamorous of all, the worker disclosed that a ‘code two’ announcement over the store’s public address system spelled disaster for the cleaners. “It just so happens that some customers like to use the floor as a toilet. A code two coming across the tannoy for the cleaners means they’re just being made aware they’re going to be cleaning up some bodily fluid.”
Aldi was approached for a comment. Primark chose not to comment at the time.
