Airbnb guest who paid over £1k outraged as host texts list of chores to complete

A woman was shocked when her Airbnb host sent her a list of chores she was asked to complete after being charged over £1,000 for a two night stay and a cleaning fee.

Sharing her ordeal on X, the woman explained she received a text message from the host of her coastal Oregon town Airbnb just hours before her family and herself were meant to check out.

“Thank you for your stay. Please follow the departure instructions, mostly importantly removing all garbage and recycling, loading and starting the dishwasher, starting laundry, checking for your belongings and removing all food items,” the message read.

The guest, known as @luinalaska on X, quickly took to social media to share the message and said: “My last Airbnb I’ll ever use. $1,300 for two nights with a cleaning fee and I get this before 9.00 am. Will never stop sharing it.”

Since posting about her ordeal, the user also shared that she was asked to leave a tip for the cleaners, despite paying a cleaning fee and doing the dishes and laundry herself.

The woman also posted the “additional rules” statement on the original Airbnb listing, which only mentioned that guests had to be over the age of 24, strict parking rules, and that ‘other important info will be sent via email.’

“Zero emails were ever sent regarding any of it,” the guest said. “There isn’t a damn thing here in this listing about me doing the dishes. SHENANIGANS”.

Upon her Tweet garnering millions of views, the woman shared a video update days after her initial post saying that Airbnb had since gotten in contact with her.

“I didn’t feel like I needed a refund or anything of that nature – I did offer what I thought might be helpful suggestions, but I haven’t heard anything back, which I find unprofessional,” she said.

“In an Airbnb, really that’s a business transaction in which the logistics of their turn over is a business logistics issue for them, and not a curtesy problem for the guests who are paying to be there,” the woman added.

The issue left X users divided, with some siding with the guest and others insisting that the cleanup demands were completely reasonable.

“Yes! You are 100 percent correct. This is why I will always stay in hotels,’” one user wrote.

“This is ridiculous what with you paying a ‘cleaning fee’ what ever for?? You did all the cleaning! They should send that portion back to you, at least,” another said.

However, some disagreed, with one person replying:  “Why wouldn’t you do the dishes? I always clean up after myself and leave the place better than when I found it. It’s courtesy.”

“Most Airbnb’s ask you to throw all the towels in the washer and run it because it takes 2+ hours to wash and they want it done for the next guest. Seems reasonable to me,” another added.
