Accused Connecticut ax murderer expected to take plea deal next month

A Connecticut man accused of killing the mother of his child with an ax is expected to take a plea deal on Oct. 4.

Ewen Dewitt, 44, has been charged with murder in the death of Julie Minogue, 40, at her home in Milford on Dec. 6, 2022.

Prosecutors, defense attorneys and lawyers representing Minogue’s family met Tuesday in Connecticut Superior Court to discuss a plea deal with a judge, the Connecticut Post reported. Minogue’s family and Dewitt’s attorneys have previously said they want to avoid a trial.

“It is certainly anticipated that the state will make an offer” at the next hearing on Oct. 4, Judge Kevn Russo said, according to the CT Post. The terms of the deal were not revealed to the public.

Prior to the killing, Dewitt was already under investigation after Minogue previously filed a police report for an alleged 2019 assault. Just weeks before the attack, Minogue obtained a restraining order against Dewitt after telling police he had sent her 220 text messages, including threats.

“I am scared for the safety of my children and I. Ewen has got himself into a lot of trouble with drugs and alcohol and I’m scared he’s going to kill me,” she told the cops in 2022.

On the night of Dec. 6, Dewitt stormed into the home where Minogue’s two children, ages 3 and 17, were sleeping. The 3-year-old boy was Dewitt and Minogue’s son.

Dewitt attacked Minogue with an ax, and the 17-year-old came downstairs to find Dewitt standing over his mother’s dead body with the bloody weapon, according to police.

Police captured Dewitt hours later in West Haven. He has been detained ever since.
