New footage of Tyrod Taylor’s touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson reveals Aaron Rodgers applauding his back-up quarterback, showing support for the team that may be planning to move him on in just a few days.
Rodgers’ future with the New York Jets is uncertain, amid rumours he could be released after the season as the organisation looks to rebuild with a new general manager, quarterback and head coach – a situation all too familiar for Jets fans.
Interestingly, Rodgers removed himself from the game when the Jets were trailing 30 to the Buffalo Bills, suggesting to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich that Taylor should play, despite the veteran having had limited field time this season.
Shortly afterwards, Taylor led the Jets down the field before connecting with Garrett Wilson in the endzone, with Rodgers seen applauding.
Rodgers then spoke to Taylor after he left the field, discussing the plays and defences that the Bills had been using, with the iconic quarterback seemingly acting as a mentor.
Later, Taylor led another impressive drive down the field, culminating in a touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Conklin.
The Jets have yet to announce which quarterback will play this weekend, in what could be Rodgers’ final game with the organisation… and possibly in the NFL.
The 41 year old quarterback discovered this week that he’s almost certain to be released from the team this offseason, with the aforementioned Wilson reportedly wanting a trade if Rodgers stays.
The two have not seen eye-to-eye this season, with the rising star expressing dissatisfaction with his targets and allegedly voicing his grievances about not receiving the ball when open.
Although Rodgers is contracted until the 2025 season, the Jets can release him and spread his salary cap over the next few years – absorbing a $14 million dead cap this year and $7 million for the subsequent two years.
However, the Jets may struggle to find a suitable replacement for Rodgers this offseason due to a lack of viable options.
They could potentially trade up to secure either Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward in the draft, or perhaps attempt to negotiate a trade for a veteran or current backup.
