I visited a village with nothing but a pub and it was the best roast dinner I've ever had

It’s a huge treat having Sunday lunch out, but with rising costs, they can turn out to be pretty pricey.

However, after seeing the May family online take over a pub not too far away from where I live, I had to check it out.

The TikTok creators, known as Daddy May Cooks online, have two accounts with over three million followers between them.

They rose to fame throughout lockdown where they would share their dinner recipes and daily life content.

Earlier this year, they took over a new village pub, located in Butlers Cross, a hamlet within the parish of Ellesborough in Buckinghamshire.

The pub became so popular that the roast dinners sold out for weeks, and it was increasingly hard to get a table at the pub.

However, as the hype died off slightly, I managed to book a table there a few weeks ago to give it a go myself.

The situation of the pub is stunning, with nothing but countryside surrounding it, and it’s the only amenity within the hamlet, with not much going on in Ellesborough either.

However, there are some stunning walks nearby through the Chilterns and it was evident lots of dog walkers stop in the pub for a bite to eat or a drink.

One walk which is beautiful is the Coombe Hill and Chequers trail where you can see rare chalk grassland and the Prime Minister’s country retreat at Chequers.

The pub, known as The Russell Arms, offers visitors a delicious dinner, Sunday lunch, a few drinks, a coffee and a light bite lunch menu.

However, it was the Sunday lunch we were going for, and it was absolutely delicious.

Despite waiting a little over our scheduled time to sit down to eat, the staff were polite, and friendly and couldn’t do more for you.

Not to mention, the food was absolutely incredible and so worth the money.

Although they’ve changed to a winter menu now, with our dinners, which consisted of delicious beef, potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding, you also got a vegetable platter.

This included carrots, parsnips, broccoli and beans, as well as cauliflower cheese, which were delicious and unusual for a beef dinner.

Our roast dinners were £23 which I thought was reasonable before I saw what you got with it, making it such good value for money.

I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in the area after a walk or passing by and I will soon be visiting again.
