The November gardening tips that will help make your garden come to life by spring

Over winter your garden can start to look drab, but this tip will help you to keep it looking cared for over the colder months.

In November, there is still time to enjoy the autumn colours before the winter sets in and there are a few jobs you should complete in your garden now.

Early November is the perfect time to plant tulip bulbs for next year.

Dry bulbs should be planted in autumn when the plant is dormant. If you’re not able to plant tulip bulbs straight away, store them in a cool dry place until you can, say RHS.

Tulips are popular among UK gardeners and these pretty flowers are known for their bright colours come spring.

For the best chance of them growing well in your garden, now is the ideal time to get out into your garden and start planting. But this isn’t the only November gardening tip you should do.

If you have any tender plants in your garden, you should make sure they are protected from the cold winter weather.

Some plants may need to be moved into your greenhouse if you have one or into a sheltered spot where they’ll suffer less damage from winter weather.

Another tip to make sure your plants don’t get destroyed is to raise your containers onto pot feet which will prevent waterlogging in rain.

By raising these pots up off the ground, water will be able to drain out of the pot meaning your plants won’t be overwatered.

Also make sure to gather up and bin the fallen leaves of roses affected by black spot, so they don’t carry the disease over to next year.

Pruning your plants is one of the biggest gardening jobs to carry out in November as many plants enter dormancy due to the cooler weather.

This can help to make your garden look better over winter as many plants won’t grow throughout the colder months.

By completing these simple gardening tasks now, by next spring your garden will be easy to maintain and well prepared for you to begin work on it for the summer.
