Britain's top 10 hard-up towns where workers are scrambling for second jobs – full list

Britain’s cities and towns where people are most likely to be looking for second jobs just to make ends meet have been identified.

Nationally, some 43 percent of adults have at least one side-hustle, according to research by Finder.

Now, a study has identified those areas where people are most likely to do a Google search related to second job opportunities, which might be anything from dog walking and pub work to takeout deliveries.

The research, pulled together by personal finance experts at WealthUp, analysed Google searches such as “side hustle ideas” and “ways to make extra money” over the last 12 months.

Bury in Greater Manchester came out on top where there was an average of 525.6 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. That is nearly three times higher than the national average of 191.4.

The most popular terms residents searched for were “side hustle”, “make money from home” and “side hustle ideas.”

Dartford was found to have the second highest interest with 448.3 searches per 100,000 residents – 134 percent above the national average.

In third was Wellingborough at 393.8 searches per 100,000 people, which was 106 percent higher than average.

At the other end of the scale, those in Newport are least likely to be looking for extra work. There were only 33.7 searches per 100,000 people, which is 82 percent lower than the UK average.

Hastings is the second-least interested at 47.5 searches per 100,000 residents – 75 percent below the national average.

Following behind is Cardiff with 53.7 searches per 100,000 residents, searching 72 percent less than the typical Brit.

Riley Adams, founder and chief executive of WealthUp, said: “While it’s not always clear what drives these differences, the UK’s increased cost of living has meant that many people are looking to supplement their primary income, in order to feel more financially secure.

“If you are struggling to keep on top of your bills, or if you just need to allocate additional money to your personal spending or savings, a side hustle could be a viable option if you have the time.”

He added: “For the best chance of success over the long term, try to strike a balance between something that you enjoy, something that you are good at and something that suits your personal situation.

“If you love animals and have time in the evenings or weekends, consider setting up a dog walking service and target customers who might not have the time or inclination to exercise their pets.

“Or, if you have little free time to put into a side hustle, consider assets that you already own, which might already be in high demand. If you have a spare room and don’t mind the occasional guest, consider letting it out on Airbnb at a competitive rate.

“Alternatively, if you own a car and work from home, consider leasing out your vehicle on platforms such as Hiyacar or Turo, rather than letting it sit on your driveway.”
