The incredible £34billion new African city with the continent's tallest skyscraper

The tallest building in Africa is a massive 400-metre-high (1,300ft) skyscraper with 77 floors, and it was built at the heart of a new city.

The Iconic Tower in the New Administrative Capital of Egypt was built as part of a wider project to build a new capital city.

Construction of the city, comprised of 20 towers in total and with an overall area of 265,000 m2 (2,850,000 sq ft), is still ongoing.

The Iconic Tower reportedly weighs a staggering 4,600 tonnes.

The construction of the Iconic Tower started in 2018. The project is being led by China State Construction Engineering.

After completion in 2021, the building became the tallest in Africa, overtaking the Great Mosque of Algiers Tower in Algeria.

The New Administrative Capital of Egypt is set to be the size of Singapore., and will also include a intelligence headquarters and new presidential palace.

The Inconic Tower was designed by architects from Dar al-Handasah Shair & Partners.

A striking feature of the tower is the pharaonic obelisk-inspired design seen on one side of the building.

An obelisk is a tall, slender, tapered monument with four sides and a pyramidal or pyramidion top.

This was done as a nod to Egypt’s rich ancient history.

AN LED lights facade is also fitted to the tower meaning it can light up in different colours at night.

Air vents in the building are also designed to rotate depending on where the sun is, ensuring temperatures can stay cool for those inside.

The first 40 stories of the building have been allocated for office space for some big companies, as well as the Central Bank of Egypt and the Egyptian stock exchange.

The rest will be used for luxurious apartments, a five star hotel, and a 75th floor viewing deck.

Spas, swimming pools, a cinema and a helipad are among the other features that are planned for the building.

It is not known how much the building cost to build, but the entire New Administrative Capital project will cost a reported $45billion (£34billion).
