A small earthquake rattled residents across eastern Connecticut Thursday morning.
The 1.8-magnitude quake struck near Ledyard around 8:20 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Some confused residents called 911, telling authorities of their rattling windows and the rumbling ground. The callers were initially told it was not an earthquake, prompting some to research whether there were any blasting permits in the area, WFSB reported.
“The Town Hall, Police Department and Emergency Management teams are aware of the incidents that occurred in the Mystic/Old Mystic area consisting of loud booms and shaking of buildings,” the Town of Stonington said in a statement shared on Facebook. “We are working to identify the cause and will keep you posted as we learn more.”
Officials later confirmed the early-morning chaos was in fact an earthquake. No injuries or damages were reported.
A similar incident was also reported in East Hampton earlier this month.
