From smart home tech to travel deals – what Brits love to boast about most

A third of Brits confess that the best part about making a smart purchase is boasting about the savings.

A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 49% of those who shop around relish in scoring savings on big-ticket items such as smart home tech, cars and designer gear.

These savvy finds make 52% feel happy and proud, while 35% admit the best part of saving on a purchase is telling partners, friends and colleagues about it.

Over three fifths get the most satisfaction from finding a great deal or discount on something they were already planning to buy. However, negotiating a good price on bills, discovering travel deals or saving money with bulk buys were also purchases respondents want to boast about.

The study was commissioned by connected smart home brand, Hive makers of eco tech products like smart thermostats and energy efficient lighting. The company has partnered with solar subscription provider, Sunsave, to help homeowners save on their energy bills with solar.

Susan Wells, director, EV and Solar at Hive, said: “Brits love finding a great deal on things they already plan to buy, and it’s even more rewarding when those savings come with a positive environmental impact. Savvy, smart and sustainable savings are at the core of what we offer.”

The study revealed that over half of those surveyed, via OnePoll, have actively strived to outdo their friends or neighbours by securing better deals. Astonishingly, more than one in 10 (14%) take pleasure in ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ by bragging to their neighbour about their smart savings.

Londoners were particularly keen on sharing their financial victories (53%) – compared to a mere 38% of Scots and 36% of people in Wales – who are more reserved about their money-saving wins.

However, this pursuit for financial savings is particularly noticeable among younger generations, with 71% of Gen Z, aged up to 27, and Millennials, aged 28 to 43, attempting to outperform their peers in obtaining favourable offers.

The excitement of sharing news of their savings is also highest in Gen Z and Millennials, with 50% of these younger generations enjoying this compared to just 25% of all the older generations combined.

Moreover, 54% of Gen Z and Millennials are also considering investing in sustainable solutions like solar panels.
