Research shows diverse health habits among UK men, as London men lead as healthiest

A recent study has revealed that men living in London, Leeds, and Manchester perceive themselves to be the healthiest in the UK.

The research, which polled 2,000 men, found that those residing in the capital tend to smoke fewer cigarettes, consume more water, and are more likely to have a gym membership than their counterparts in other cities.

Men in Manchester also reported healthy habits, including drinking four glasses of water daily, consuming three portions of fruits and vegetables, and with 40% claiming they can perform 10 sit-ups consecutively without exhaustion.

Additionally, nearly half (48%) of men in Manchester cook meals from scratch, and 64% prioritize getting fresh air. Notably, a significant proportion of men in Leeds (82%) reported never having used a vape.

Conversely, men living in Sheffield rated themselves as the unhealthiest and reported hydrating less frequently. Residents of Newcastle were found to be more likely to smoke cigarettes multiple times a day.

The study also identified the top indicators of good health, as perceived by the men surveyed, including high energy levels, low body fat, and the ability to exercise without excessive fatigue.

A spokesperson for Vitabiotics Wellman, which commissioned the survey and counts male supermodel David Gandy among its brand ambassadors, commented: “Health is different for everybody.

“But it’s been interesting to see the differences from men around the nation, when it comes to different aspects of health. There are lots of different things that can impact your physical wellbeing, it’s not just about how often you go to the gym.”

The research revealed a mere 17% of Sheffield men hold a gym membership. And in Bristol, 28% confessed they have ‘never’ been for a run, the highest percentage among all cities.

Birmingham males are most likely to commute by car and thus walk the least, averaging a scanty 5,079 steps daily, barely over half the recommended amount.

According to the stuyd, the average man believes they need to exercise at least three times a week to be deemed ‘healthy’. However, only 60% believe they could manage carrying a ‘moderately’ heavy load of shopping bags for 50 metres.

A spokesperson for Wellman commented: “Good health starts from within. It’s about how you nourish your body, maintain energy, and prioritise your overall wellbeing.”

“Our research highlights the importance of physical activity and making healthier lifestyle choices. True health is about balance-when you feel your best physically, it has a positive impact on every aspect of your life, from work to personal relationships.”
