The father of Logan Federico, a 22-year-old college student murdered during a home break-in, is demanding federal lawmakers close the legal loopholes that allow career criminals back onto the street.

Stephen Federico is championing “Logan’s Law,” a legislative proposal that would mandate a public database for repeat violent offenders, force cross-county and interstate communication, and hold prosecutors accountable when handling habitual criminals.

The bill aims to eliminate systemic blind spots that allowed Logan’s accused killer, Alexander Dickey, to avoid long-term confinement despite a lengthy record.

On Thursday, Federico spoke during a roundtable in South Carolina attended by U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, pushing for Logan’s Law, which would create a registry for violent repeat offenders. “This was preventable. And d—–, I’m not going to save just one more life,” Federico said Thursday during a South Carolina roundtable on crime reduction, which was attended by U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche. “I’m going to save thousands.”

Federico pointed to broader systemic breakdowns, comparing domestic criminal justice failures to immigration enforcement gaps.

“We are fighting 15 million that crossed our borders — some horrific criminals, some not,” he added. “Now we’re also fighting the constant felon. How are we supposed to win without Logan’s Law?”

Introduced by U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., and the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Logan’s Law has not yet formally come to the floor in either the House or the Senate.

“Common sense works. Common sense is easy,” Fry said, comparing the proposed legislation to existing public registries. “We have a sexual abuse registry that is publicly searchable. This is for violent crimes – it’s the same concept.”

Attorney General Blanche urged lawmakers to move swiftly.

“It took a tragedy to push it to the forefront,” Blanche said. “But that’s okay. I think the worst thing we could do is not act.”

Blanche expressed hope for bipartisan support, adding, “I don’t think it’s a controversial issue… I know President Trump supports it.”

Logan Federico, a North Carolina college student, was staying with friends at a South Carolina home on May 3, 2025, when Dickey allegedly broke in.

According to Columbia police, Dickey drove a stolen vehicle into the neighborhood, broke into one home to steal vehicle keys and a firearm, and then forced his way into the house where Federico was staying.

Inside, Dickey stole credit cards and fatally shot Federico. Her father noted that she was awake during the intrusion.

“He didn’t kill our daughter for a debit card,” Federico said. “She was the only one awake who could identify him. He killed a witness.”

Dickey had an extensive criminal record dating back to 2013, including convictions for breaking and entering, burglary, grand larceny, strong-arm robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and resisting arrest. Critics and authorities argue he slipped through the cracks of a lenient justice system.

“What we do as a society right now is make the criminal more important than the innocent,” Federico said, criticizing progressive policies such as reduced sentencing and no-cash bail. “We have turned the page. We are the underdogs.”
