Giants sign OT Chris Hubbard off 49ers’ practice squad with franchise left tackle Andrew Thomas out for season

The Giants signed veteran offensive lineman Chris Hubbard off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, and he practiced with the team on Friday.

They poached Hubbard, 33, to bolster their depth with franchise left tackle Andrew Thomas out for the season after undergoing foot surgery. But Hubbard has not played a ton of left tackle, so it will be interesting to see where he fits.

“We’ll put him into the mix,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “I don’t think he’ll necessarily be ready after one day.”

Hubbard has played in 94 games and started 58 in his 11-year career. He played 472 snaps at right tackle for the Tennessee Titans last season.

He has not played meaningful snaps at left tackle since logging 39 for the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 of the 2021 season. The last time Hubbard started a majority of his team’s games in a season, in fact, he played 846 snaps at right tackle and 45 on the left for the 2019 Browns.

Josh Ezeudu is expected to start at left tackle Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. If Ezeudu struggles, the Giants could give Hubbard a shot there in Week 8, or Joe Schoen and Daboll could slide right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor over to the left.

If they do that, it’s also possible Hubbard could be here to compete with Evan Neal for the opportunity to play the right, which would really be something.

Time will tell.
