The incredible city with white slopes that look like snow but don't melt in the sun

If snow-capped mountains and effervescent bathing pools is your idea of heaven then Pamukkale deserves your interest.

With a name that means “cotton castle” in Turkish, Pamukkale is a sight to behold.

But for those thinking the far away mountains make for perfect skiing, they’ll be in for a surprise as what sits atop the region’s sunkissed hills is not snow at all.

This natural phenomenon only adds to Pamukkale’s unique charm with a host of exciting activities and sights to marvel at.

In addition to its illusionary scenery, the hot springs of the region only adds to Pamukkale’s uniqueness.

Pamukkale is located in western Turkey in the province of Denizli.

This Turkish destination is known for its mineral-rich thermal waters which cascade down travertine terraces on a nearby hillside adding to its unreal landscape.

According to UNESCO World Heritage Site, which Pamukkale is part of, the surrounding area of Pamukkale is “made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins.

The thermal pools and mineral forests at Pamukkale have been known since roughly the 2nd century B.C.

Alongside its magical setting, the beautiful wonder of its illusion of snow capped mountains is in fact water which is formed from spurts boiling underground.

The region’s white terraces are made of travertine which is a sedimentary rock formed by minerals from hot springs.

These hot springs produce water with high levels of calcium carbonate which de-gasses as the water reaches the surface.

The calcium carbonate then deposits into a soft gel which over time, crystallizes into travertine, creating the illusion of snow.

Pamukkale’s terraces attract people from all over the world thanks to its milky-white water, creating a surreal sight and calming the mind and body due to its therapeutic element.

Many Turks believe that by simply bathing in the water, a number of illnesses can be treated including cardiovascular, skin and rheumatic conditions.

Best of all, the water is warm enough for a long dip even during the colder months of winter.

The Antique Pool is found roughly five minutes from the top of the terraces and offers the jacuzzi experience as you near the source of the water which begins filling up around you with tiny and fizzing bubbles.

“Travertines of Pammukale was pure rapture for me,” wrote one TripAdvisor review.

“It was like I was walking on clouds and the milky way. It’s just fantastic. History and archaeology buffs will be very interested too.”
